What is “Direct Primary Care?”

Durham Direct Primary Care ProviderDirect primary care is family medicine without the middleman! For one monthly fee, you’ll have unlimited appointments with Dr. Hong, a board-certified physician, in addition to 24/7 access via text and email so you can ask questions, voice concerns, or request prescription refills. We also provide house calls upon request!

Other benefits of direct primary care include same-day appointments and a direct relationship with your primary physician without insurance red tape.

What is the membership fee and what does it cover?

For $75 a month for a single adult or $140 a month for a couple, you will receive unlimited office visits with Doc Matt. From your yearly physical to chronic condition management and routine blood work, we’re here to provide quality care when you need it. Your membership fee also includes same-day services, 24/7 texting and email services, and even house calls! 

How do I pay my monthly membership fee?

Your monthly fee is automatically charged to your preferred debit or credit card.

How do I know if this is right for me?

Direct primary care is the perfect option for people who are looking to:

  • Save money. You don’t have to worry about coming up with a co-pay or meeting a deductible when you get sick unexpectedly, and we also work to keep you healthy by providing a wide array of preventative care services.
  • Save time. If you have a question, send us a text message and we’ll get back to you almost immediately! No time to stop by the pharmacy? We can drop off your prescription to you with our included house call service. With our flexible hours and services, we’re here when you need us most!
  • Receive high-quality care. By eliminating the insurance companies, we’re able to create an individual care plan for you, and because we don’t charge per appointment, we are able to spend more time with you to answer your questions and make sure we’re on the same page for your care.

What if I need medical care when I’m away from home?

When you need care but can’t make it to the office, Doc Matt is available via phone call, text, or email 24/7. If you need more involved healthcare, we can advise you on that as well.

Do you treat chronic conditions?

Dr. Hong is a board-certified family physician and is happy to help create a care plan for chronic conditions including asthma, allergies, and similar illnesses. However, for conditions that require more specialized treatment, such as chronic pain, HIV, or heart disease, we will be happy to refer you to a specialist.

Do you provide prescription medication?

We offer a wide variety of prescription medications for acute and chronic conditions at our cost, which is significantly below the pharmacy price. We do not prescribe pain management or narcotics.

When is payment due for additional services or prescriptions?

Sometimes there are additional fees for joint injections or lab testing. These fees, in addition to the cost of prescription medications, are due at the time of service.

Can you offer plans for my employees?

Yes! At Doc Matt Direct, we know you want to provide care for your employees but group insurance is overwhelmingly cost-prohibitive. To help you provide benefits to your employees, we offer healthcare plans that fit your small business budget. Contact us for more information about small business plans.

How do I establish care?

When you sign up for care through Doc Matt Direct, we set up an initial appointment that lasts around one hour to discuss your medical history along with a physical and screening tests. We follow up with you regarding your results and begin a plan of health care moving forward as necessary.

Insurance Questions

How does insurance factor into direct primary care?

To provide you with personalized, low-cost care, we don’t participate in any insurance billing, including Medicare. We simply charge a monthly fee for treatment.

If you have insurance, you can still become a member at Doc Matt Direct but our services are not covered by insurance and will not be submitted for reimbursement.

If you currently have an insurance plan and require outside testing, we refer you to a specialist, or hospitalization is needed, your insurance may cover a portion of those costs. Additionally, if you have a health savings account (HSA) or flex spending, you may be able to use those for our monthly fee or submit them for reimbursement. Coverage and eligibility varies by plan so always check with your carrier before seeking treatment.

Do I still need insurance?

While we do not accept insurance, we still recommend carrying a high-deductible, “catastrophic” plan to cover hospitalization or serious injury. Without this type of plan, you will not have coverage in the event of an emergency. If you need assistance choosing a plan, we can help.

Do you take Medicare or Medicaid?

No, we don’t accept Medicare or Medicaid. Patients with this coverage can still become members at Doc Matt Direct but monthly membership fees and additional costs cannot be submitted to Medicare/Medicaid for reimbursement.

What about the ACA tax penalty?

It is important to note that as of 2019, the ACA/Obamacare tax penalty no longer applies so it is not necessary to have health insurance to avoid paying the penalty. A catastrophic plan is still strongly recommended in case of emergency.
